{"id":967,"date":"2011-12-25T14:47:07","date_gmt":"2011-12-25T14:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/?p=967"},"modified":"2016-11-16T03:45:10","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T03:45:10","slug":"the-best-of-2011-part-2-packaging-design-the-good-the-great-and-the-tragic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/the-best-of-2011-part-2-packaging-design-the-good-the-great-and-the-tragic\/","title":{"rendered":"The Best of 2011 Part 2: Packaging design, The Good, The Great, and The Tragic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part 2 of our 2011 year in review, we are taking at look at some of this years show-stopping, jaw dropping, <a title=\"packaging design\" href=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/services\/packaging-design\/\">packaging design<\/a> hits and misses.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve got to hand it to P&amp;G for doing a stellar job on two much needed revamps\u2026enter Old Spice and Ivory Soap.\u00a0 Old Spice was struggling with consumer misconception that the fragrances smelled, well, old.\u00a0 The new package design conveys the refreshed scents in a way that makes them appear youthful and palpably fresh. Top marks for attempting to change consumer perceptions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-974\" src=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6a00d8345250f069e20133ecd4c834970b-550wi.jpg\" alt=\"6a00d8345250f069e20133ecd4c834970b-550wi\" width=\"550\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6a00d8345250f069e20133ecd4c834970b-550wi.jpg 550w, https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6a00d8345250f069e20133ecd4c834970b-550wi-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ivory, was also struggling with perception issues, or lack their of, as their old packaging fell to the background on shelf.\u00a0 As a means for increasing impact on shelf the brand kept its iconic logo but amped up the brand colors for a necessary pop that didn\u2019t alienate current consumers, but made potential new ones take notice.\u00a0 Top marks for staying true to the brand and creating a clean and simple design that gets noticed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-973\" src=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/11_10_11_ivory6.jpg\" alt=\"11_10_11_ivory6\" width=\"700\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/11_10_11_ivory6.jpg 700w, https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/11_10_11_ivory6-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The P&amp;G did a great job in terms of packaging evolution, but it\u2019s this next revolution that caught our eye and scored top marks.\u00a0 Kohberg, the Danish bread manufacturer that partners with a the The Danish Cancer Society in its fight against breast cancer created this jaw-dropping package to increase brand awareness and channel funds to the cancer society.\u00a0 The cleverly, tongue-in-cheek, packaged rye bread rolls are both eye catching, clever and beautifully simple.\u00a0 Top marks to raising awareness for a good cause while giving us a good giggle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-972\" src=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/10_21_11_kohberg1.jpg\" alt=\"10_21_11_kohberg1\" width=\"700\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/10_21_11_kohberg1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/10_21_11_kohberg1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And speaking of good causes\u2026this packaging from L Condoms is a real game changer.\u00a0 A far cry from the cheesy packages of big brands, the L Condom is chic, sophisticated and purpose driven.\u00a0 L Condoms empowers women globally by perpetuating the basic human right to safe sex by distributing condoms in developing countries. \u00a0 Top marks for game changing packaging that is a vehicle for good.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-971\" src=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/05_18_11_Lcondom_2.jpg\" alt=\"05_18_11_lcondom_2\" width=\"700\" height=\"839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/05_18_11_Lcondom_2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/05_18_11_Lcondom_2-250x300.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our product designers are always looking at packages and how their functionality can add value for the consumer.\u00a0 We applaud this sort of thinking, but sometimes, something beautiful is enough to alter the perceived value of a product and make consumers fall in love.\u00a0 This year, Ramlosa did just that.\u00a0 With the redesign of their bottle we can practically taste the crisp and refreshing water the new bottle holds.\u00a0 The angular, icy design is suggesting of where the water hales from.\u00a0 Oh, and did we mention it reduces cost and waste?! Top marks for making us thirst for this gorgeous bottle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-975\" src=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/09_12_11_ramlosa111.jpg\" alt=\"09_12_11_ramlosa111\" width=\"700\" height=\"911\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/09_12_11_ramlosa111.jpg 700w, https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/09_12_11_ramlosa111-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And this wouldn\u2019t be a round up if we didn\u2019t consider the most epic package designs, but also design failures.\u00a0 I think we\u2019ll always remember Gap\u2019s fleeting logo switch that left design critics outraged and consumers scratching their heads.\u00a0 What started as an alleged \u201ccrowdsourcing experiment\u201d turned into an epic social media case study, and left Gap totally embarrassed.\u00a0 Bottom marks for a complete absence of thought and a total abandonment of the brand standards.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-970\" src=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/newgap.jpg\" alt=\"newgap\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/newgap.jpg 300w, https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/newgap-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And then there was JCPenny.\u00a0 On the heels of their SEO scandal JCP launched a new image to set the stage for a new brand initiative that would usher them in as \u201cAmerica\u2019s favorite shopping destination.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s a big job for a little logo.\u00a0 The move to all lower case and a uniform red square wasn\u2019t enough to capture our hearts or our dollars.\u00a0 When your less than kosher online marketing practices are exposed, you\u2019ll need a little more than a new logo to win us over.\u00a0 Just saying.\u00a0 Bottom marks for thinking a new logo is a cure-all.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-976\" src=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/image.jpg\" alt=\"image\" width=\"182\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/image.jpg 182w, https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/image-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 182px) 100vw, 182px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And because we always like to end on a high note, lets have a round of applause for Guinness Draught for making a good packaging great.\u00a0 Simplicity was the name of the game when they took their iconic harp and turned it into an emblem for the brand.\u00a0 The clean, yet irreverent design draws your eye and raises the perceived value of the package.\u00a0 Top marks for reveling in their heritage, beautifully and simply.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-969\" src=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/minimalistbranding700x350.jpg\" alt=\"minimalistbranding700x350\" width=\"700\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/minimalistbranding700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/minimalistbranding700x350-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And though we have had some real winners this year, the true winner, in our minds, is the redesigned Puma package that reduces its carbon footprint, and is a greener solution to an already pretty green process.\u00a0 Top marks for the sheer ingenuity and thinking outside of the box\u2026pun intended.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-968\" src=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6a00d8345250f069e20133ecaaa82c970b-550wi.jpg\" alt=\"6a00d8345250f069e20133ecaaa82c970b-550wi\" width=\"500\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6a00d8345250f069e20133ecaaa82c970b-550wi.jpg 500w, https:\/\/imagemme.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6a00d8345250f069e20133ecaaa82c970b-550wi-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As part 2 of our 2011 year in review, we are taking at look at some of this years show-stopping, jaw dropping, packaging design hits and misses.
