Trending Package Design

Having been recognized by the Dieline for our own package design, we often look to the blog for inspiration and just a general sense of what’s going on in the industry. They recently shared an article listing their favorite package design from the month of may so, we decided to take a peek into the current trends of the industry…

Vintage Feel

One of the first things we noticed about this month’s most popular package design concepts was the use of vintage aesthetics. Cabin Brewing company applied 70’s typography as well as color palettes to their new line of beverages. The vintage aesthetic, new to the consumers today somehow translates a modern contemporary look and feel that we love. We especially appreciate this design because as designers, we love vintage things! We love old architecture, technology and clothing but for some reason we never design these things. We’re constantly pushed to focus on modernizing the appeal of products and packaging.

Graphic Design Elements

A new contemporary look that has been rising in 2020 is the use of graphic patterns and we absolutely love it. Olympic extra virgin olive oil’s use of graphic patterns, while simple is an extremely effective execution. The graphic rings on the labeling of the bottle are encapsulating and different from most things we’ve seen on the market. The design transports the viewer to a far away place that evokes thoughts of modernism and flawlessly translates the current landscape of contemporary design. It doesn’t hurt that in addition to the cool fresh new look the use of the graphic pattern here also adds a level of taste and sophistication to the product.

Simple Illustration On White Backgrounds

Another thing we’re seeing come in to play is the application of what a designer may consider a “simple” illustration applied to a white background. We’ve seen this employed by brands like “Cat Person”, “Bilio” & “Freya Body Semantics”. We first saw this aesthetic popularized in 2014, with the rise of the minimalist- monochromatic wave. In 2020 this aesthetic has taken a more playful turn by incorporating color and sketches with positive personalities. The use of a colorful illustration applied to white space is a simple way to create depth around the illustration, almost as if the image sits in a 3d space. We see this on the freya packaging.

Matte Colors

Matte colors are definitely trending in 2020. This is absolutely one of our favorite trends. The use of matte colors works in conjunction with the application of the vintage aesthetic and is a great way to give packaging an element of texture. This is also a nice transition from the youthful trend of bright, loud colors; to a more mature look and feel.

3- Dimensional Space

The last trend we’ve noticed and our personal favorite, is the manipulation of flat elements to create 3-Dimensional space.  This is an extremely contemporary design trend that our team hasn’t really come across in the market. An artful graphic design technique like this is an effective way to invoke intrigue in packaging and catch a consumers eye. Simple yet effective, “4Lifes” labels for their vitamin water are a design trend that we very much look forward to seeing adopted and experimented by the packaging design community.
